Explosive outbreaks of influenza occur each year during the late autumn and winter months in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres. Outbreaks usually last for 5–8 weeks in a given region, during which time the rapid spread of infection can have an impact on whole populations.1 In fact, it is estimated that 10–20% of the global population is affected during an influenza epidemic.2
