Influenza epidemics are a major annual cause of mortality throughout the world. In the USA alone, between the years of 1979 and 2001, it has been estimated that >40,000 people per year died as a result of influenza-related infection.1
While influenza causes substantial mortality across the age spectrum, certain groups are at higher risk. These at-risk groups include children (especially those <5 years of age)2 and the elderly.3
