Notater:
Influenza imposes a heavy burden on the individual. It typically results in up to 7 days of acute illness, of which at least 3–4 days are spent in bed. Furthermore, symptoms may continue to limit activity for a further 2 weeks, causing individuals to take time off work and curtail their everyday life.
As well as acute symptoms, influenza can lead to complications including sinusitis, bronchitis, pneumonia and otitis media.1 Some of these complications can be serious and lead to hospitalisation. Inappropriate use of antibiotics is also common. In addition, as a result of the associated complications, influenza increases the mortality rate within a population. As many as 18–20% of all influenza deaths occur in adults <65 years old, with one-third of these in otherwise healthy adults.2,3
